Evaluations and Therapy

In addition to the areas listed below, we have speech-language pathologists whose areas of specialty include the evaluation and treatment of auditory language processing deficits that may negatively impact reading, writing, spelling, and academic language. Our objective is to comprehensively diagnose and treat these difficulties from a speech and language perspective, by considering multi-dimensional aspects such as memory, comprehension, vocabulary, discrimination, phonological processing, sequencing, and organization.   Therapy at the Chmela Fluency Center stresses education, speech change, developing or maintaining healthy attitudes and feelings about communication and self, and involvement of other important communication partners. Procedures in therapy are evidenced-based, including a combination of research, clinical expertise, and what is important to the client. After the needs of the client are carefully assessed, treatment plans involve problem solving based on basic principles underlying therapy, rather than implementation of specific programs. In addition to individual therapy services, the Chmela Fluency Center offers group treatment sessions for children and adolescents of similar ages.

  Everyone can work on communication skills at any time in life. We can all become more effective communicators in a variety of situations, whether in the work-place, at home, or in the community. Kristin Chmela, MA CCC-SLP, BRFS provides individualized general communication counseling for adult clients, in corporate and other settings, seeking help in areas such as organization and clarity of oral communication, public speaking, listening skills, and the effectiveness of individuals communicating as a team. General communication counseling begins with an assessment of the client's unique needs and concerns. Aspects of the client's communication are evaluated and attitudes and feelings about communication are explored. After the initial assessment, a treatment plan is developed including specific goals and recommended number of sessions.

• Reading (Decoding and Comprehension)
• Written Expression / Spelling

Summer Camp

The Chmela Fluency Center, in collaboration with other local organizations, provides an exciting opportunity for an intensive treatment experience for school-age children who stutter, in a recreational summer camp environment in. For more information about the camp, please see our News/Events.

Parent Groups

Screenings

We are available to provide screening services to children at private schools, day care centers, and pediatrician offices. In addition to speech-language screenings, we are also able to complete hearing and vision screenings for children ages 3 and up. Ask your pediatrician, or the director of your school or child care center to schedule a screening, by contacting Jennifer Malone Priest at 847-821-1237 x3 or .

A screening is an abbreviated evaluation that determines whether or not a child is performing at an age-appropriate level or if the child could benefit from further evaluation. The screening assesses the following areas:

• Articulation
• Expressive Language
• Receptive Language
• Voice
• Fluency

If there is an area of concern, a comprehensive speech-language evaluation will be recommended. Schedule permitting, we are available to provide an evaluation, as well as follow-up therapy on your site, if the parents wish to follow through on these recommendations. However, there is no obligation to proceed with services through Central Speech & Language Clinic.
